The UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC) joins the celebration of International Women’s Day with three important events that highlight the relevant and indispensable role of women, as well as the barriers they still face to achieving equity.

Fireside Chat “Women and Youth: Innovation and Higher Education”

Women and young women are invited to participate as “storytellers,” sharing their stories on “innovation and higher education.” This includes but is not limited to the following:

· Innovative pathways to access higher education.

· Innovative learning practices to overcome their studies.

· Studying and working to design new technologies and broader forms of innovation.

Violence against women in higher education

Violence against women (VAW) is a universal phenomenon, and higher education institutions (HEIs), where female enrollment and participation have increased significantly, are no exception.

On November 25, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, UNESCO IESALC called on women in higher education institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean to participate in a regional campaign that seeks to understand better whether and how women students, faculty and staff have experienced violence as part of their campus life.

The event will discuss this important topic and present some preliminary data on a regional pilot survey done to assess VAW in Latin American and Caribbean institutions.

Date: March 8, 2023

Time: 10:00h – 11:30 (Caracas, -4GMT)

Women’s participation in higher education in Southern Africa: understanding the regional landscape

A study in 9 Southern African countries (Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe) analyzes the current role of women in HE in their respective education systems.

The event, which will be attended by high-level delegates and women in the field, will discuss the preliminary results of the survey with the ultimate goal of enhancing the capacities of African higher education institutions to support women’s participation in their systems.

Date: March 9, 2023

Time: 8:00h-10:30h (Caracas, -4GMT)
