“Perspectives for Higher Education in Latin America” was the title of the dialogue held by Aníbal Jozami, rector of the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero (UNTREF), and Francesc Pedró, director of the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean, on September 11, 2019 in the auditorium of the Rectorate of the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero (UNTREF).

The meeting was used to exchange ideas around the main problems and challenges of higher education in Latin America and the Caribbean. “We are convinced that the future of education exists and that it is our responsibility to take care of that future”, said Jozami, who was president of the IESALC Board of Directors from 2000 to 2003. Concerned about the situation of gender and equity in Higher Education (HE), the rector emphasized the need to “address issues from the most engaged and marginalized sectors”.
For the IESALC there is still work ahead in order to achieve equity of opportunities in the region’s HE: “We know that there is still a problem of equity in the access to higher education; public universities have an obligation to irradiate knowledge and culture to all social strata, not only to those who access them, “said Pedró.

As part of the initiatives carried out by the Institute to strengthen the future of Latin America and the Caribbean, he mentioned the elaboration of analytical documents that show progress in terms of quality and equity in the region. On the other hand, and in the spirit of contributing to academic mobility, he announced the design of a scholarship program for research on public policies of higher education aimed at doctoral students in Latin America and the Caribbean.
