#17Nov Latin America and the Caribbean will take part in the third World Access to Higher Education Day – WAHED

On November 17th, 2020, the Latin America and the Caribbean region will have an active part in the Third World Access to Higher Education Day (WAHED), with the presentation of the conference “Inequalities in Access to Higher Education by Disadvantaged Populations in the Latin American and Caribbean Region in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic”, organized by the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean. This regional conference is framed within the global conference series WAHED24 “Access and Success in the Post Pandemic world,” which features six events, each one led by an organization active in promoting equity in higher education within their continent.

The Conference Inequalities in Access to Higher Education by Disadvantaged Populations in the Latin American and Caribbean Region in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic will be held via Zoom at 14:30, Venezuelan Standard Time -4 UTC. Francesc Pedró, Director of UNESCO IESALC, will start the program with the launching of the Toward universal access in higher education report. The two hour bilingual program (Spanish-English) counts with the participation of the guest speakers Alta Hooker, Rector at the Universidad de las Regiones Autónomas de la Costa Caribe Nicaragüense (URACCAN); Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor at The University of the West Indies & President of Universities Caribbean; Sandra Goulart Almeida, Rector at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais; Marcelo Knobel, Rector at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas and Rodrigo Arim, Rector at the Universidad de la República. 

WAHED24 is a unique collaboration between the WAHED and the Asia Europe Foundation (ASEF), Equity Practitioners in Higher Education Australasia (EPHEA), National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education (NCSEHE), the Lumina Foundation, the University of Nairobi, National Educational Opportunities Network (NEON) and the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC).

This series of six online conferences that include Australasia, Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, and Latin America bring together leaders from across the world to identify solutions to the challenges of driving forward equitable access and success in higher education in the context of the global pandemic. The conferences also seek to develop a global exchange of essential practices and ideas to support the less privileged to enter higher education.
