On May 25, 2021, a webinar will mark the launch of the new UNESCO IESALC report, Thinking Higher and Beyond: Perspectives on the Futures of Higher Education to 2050. The event will count on the participation of higher education experts about the futures of higher education around the world.

Published in English, French and Spanish, the report presents findings from consultations organized by UNESCO IESALC with 25 higher education experts based around the world who have extensive experience in teaching, researching, and/or enacting higher education. It also questions common assumptions about higher education and its contributions, creating a bold series of possibilities for different –and better– futures for higher education for all.

The report is the first phase of a multi-phased project on the Futures of Higher Education undertaken by UNESCO IESALC during 2021. The project, conducted within UNESCO’s Futures of Education flagship initiative, aims to “rethink education and shape the future.”

The webinar will begin with welcoming remarks by Francesc Pedró, UNESCO IESALC Director, and a representative of the Future of Learning and Innovation Team, UNESCO.

The report will be officially launched by Emma Sabzalieva, UNESCO IESALC Senior Policy Analyst and the consultations coordinator. Following, experts involved in the consultations will offer brief interventions on what the futures of higher education could look like. The speakers are Professor Ahmad Y. Majdoubeh, Vice President for Humanities, University of Jordan, Jordan; Professor Emerita Takyiwaa Manuh, Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana, Ghana; Professor Rajani Naidoo, Director of the International Centre of Higher Education Management and UNESCO Chair in Higher Education Management, University of Bath, UK; Professor Dzulkifli (Dzul) Razak, Rector, International Islamic University Malaysia; Professor Patricia Mariella Ruiz Bravo Lopez, UNESCO Chair in Gender Equality in Higher Education, Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, Perú.

Panelists will respond to questions from the audience. After the webinar, the report will be available for download, and the audience will learn more about the next steps for the Futures of Higher Education project.

The event will be held vía Zoom in English and Spanish with simultaneous translation
