International Education Day: Learning for lasting peace

January 24, 2024 marks International Education Day under the theme “learning for lasting peace”, in a world facing a wave of violent conflict and an alarming rise in discrimination, racism and xenophobia.
Education is a fundamental human right that is essential for sustainable development. Quality, inclusive and equitable education for all, and lifelong learning opportunities, is fundamental to achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty and hatred.
UNESCO’s recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights and Sustainable Development underlines the importance of education, which must be transformative and contribute to equipping learners with the knowledge, values, attitudes, skills and behaviors needed to become agents of peace and development in their communities.
