The UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education (UNESCO IESALC) is developing a project to support policy makers, higher education institutions (HEIs), civil society and other interest actors by offering UNESCO´s guidelines on responding to and preventing violence against women (VAW) in the tertiary education sector.

Violence against women is a universal phenomenon that occurs in various spaces, including government, private sector and higher education institutions, to name a few. Within the higher education context, it is fair to affirm the phenomenon is of global scope, despite lack of representative data about the problem in the global South. It is a serious human rights violation, rooted in gender inequality, discrimination and persisting cultural and social norms unfavorable to women.

This calls for the analysis and further promotion and establishment of strong guidelines at HEIs worldwide as a guiding principle for building non-violent and a more sustainable tertiary education system.
